L1 – l2 -SL1 – VS1: what does it mean? An in-depth guide to stone clarity
Are you in the market for a diamond engagement ring for your better half? Wondering if stone clarity is an important factor in your search? Here’s what you need to know.
What’s diamond clarity?
Clarity refers to the presence of imperfections on the surface or inside the diamond. Blemishes are surface flaws, while inclusions are internal defects. The clarity of a diamond is significant because it influences its overall value. Diamonds with fewer imperfections are worth more than those with inclusions.
Classifications
Established in 1931, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) diamond grading scale is divided into the following six categories:
- FL (Flawless). This is the highest clarity grade. It indicates that the diamond has no internal or external flaws (inclusions or blemishes) visible under 10x magnification. A flawless diamond is incredibly rare because it’s nearly impossible to find a diamond completely free of inclusions.
- IF (Internally Flawless). Diamonds in this category have no internal inclusions visible under 10x magnification but may have minor surface blemishes. These extremely rare diamonds come at a premium that increases exponentially with carat size.
- VVS1-VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included). These grades mean the diamond has very tiny inclusions that are difficult to see even under 10x magnification. VVS1 diamonds usually have one or two imperfections, while VVS2 diamonds will have several.
- VS1-VS2 (Very Slightly Included). Diamonds in this range have small inclusions that are somewhat visible under 10x magnification, but usually not with the naked eye.
- SI1-SI2 (Slightly Included). These grades fall near the bottom of the grading scale. They indicate diamonds with noticeable inclusions under 10x magnification and may be visible to the naked eye in SI2 stones. These diamonds are significantly cheaper, making a good value if you're trying to buy an engagement ring on a budget.
- I1-I2-I3 (Included). Diamonds in this category have significant inclusions and may have reduced brilliance and transparency. Inclusions are visible to the naked eye in I2-I3 stones.
Clarity vs. brilliance
Brilliance refers to a diamond’s sparkle, brightness and light performance. If you want a shimmering diamond, the cut is more important than clarity or colour. For example, you can buy a round brilliant cut diamond in a lower clarity grade that still looks nearly perfect to the naked eye. If you do want to spend money on a higher clarity, buy it from a reputable jeweller. They’ll be able to provide a certificate that authenticates its clarity.
