A brief history of men’s jewellery

When you hear the word “jewellery,” you may automatically think of women’s fashion accessories. However, men’s rings, bracelets and necklaces are making a big splash, and you might even say they’re making a comeback. In fact, men have been wearing jewellery for thousands of years in various cultures around the world. Here’s a short history of how men’s jewellery has evolved through different historical eras.

Ancient times

Historians have found evidence that men were wearing jewellery as far back as 130,000 years ago, often creating pieces out of animal teeth and shells. Moreover, Egyptian men were known to have an affinity for elaborate jewellery. Pharaohs and other wealthy men would adorn themselves with gold and gemstone jewellery to project their authority.

Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, men’s jewellery took on a religious significance. For example, cross necklaces and other religious symbols were worn as a sign of piety. Signet rings imprinted with family insignias or crests were also extremely stylish. Earrings were popular among men in the lower classes, including thieves and pirates.

Renaissance

In the Renaissance, wearing jewellery was a way to show off your wealth. For instance, gold and silver jewellery embellished with gems and coloured stones became popular for kings and nobles. In images from the time, European royalty would often be decked out with glittering accessories and headpieces. It also became popular for men from various classes to wear a single drop earring.

19th century

During the Industrial Revolution, as jewellery became more affordable and accessible to all classes, it took on a more utilitarian purpose. For instance, cufflinks and tie pins became popular accessories for men. Bold and blingy jewellery fell out of style, as it was considered outdated.

Modern times

Today, men’s jewellery is extremely varied. It’s now common for men to wear chain necklaces, cufflinks, luxury watches, tie pins and earrings. In short, anything goes! At Ben Moss, we have something to suit every taste, personality and budget. Whether you’re looking for the perfect leather bracelet, diamond ring, gold chain or hoop earrings, we have what you need.
